Our smile is how we greet the world, our loved ones, and even ourselves in the morning. When a tooth is lost in the “aesthetic zone”—the center of your smile—it can feel traumatic. Many patients feel their lives are on hold until their smile is restored.

The Challenge of the Front Teeth

Replacing a front tooth is a delicate task. If you have a “high smile line” where your gums are visible, the challenge is even greater because those gums are difficult to preserve. When a tooth is fully removed, the bone supporting the gums often begins to shrink, creating a sunken look.

Traditionally, dentists used "bone grafting" to combat this, often using materials of human, animal, or synthetic origin. While common, these can involve more invasive surgery, more swelling, and sometimes unpredictable results.

What is the Socket Shield Technique?

Introduced by Professor Hürzeler about 15 years ago, the Socket Shield Technique (or Partial Extraction Therapy) offers a more natural solution.

Instead of removing the entire tooth, we remove only the infected root canal and keep a thin "shield" of the front portion of your natural tooth root. This fragment "tricks" your body into thinking the tooth is still there, which keeps the surrounding bone and gums perfectly in place.

Why Our Patients Choose This Method

We have used this technique with great success. The advantages over classic surgery include:

  • • Less Invasive: Often, there is no need for traditional surgery, sutures, or the associated swelling.
  • Same-Day Results: We can often remove the failing tooth, place the implant, and fit a temporary crown in a single one-hour visit. You don't have to spend a single day hiding your smile. single one-hour visit. You don't have to spend a single day hiding your smile.
  • • Superior Aesthetics: Studies show this technique results in more natural-looking gums (higher "Pink Esthetic Scores") compared to standard implants.
  • Cost-Effective: Because it often eliminates the need for expensive grafting materials, it can be a more affordable long-term solution.

Why Isn’t Everyone Doing This?

While the science supports its success, Socket Shield is a highly specialized, "technique-sensitive" procedure. It requires specific training and precision that not all clinicians have invested in yet.

In our clinic, we believe your comfort and a natural result are worth that investment. We are proud to offer a procedure that lets you keep your natural architecture while gaining a permanent, beautiful new tooth.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the procedure painful?
The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, so you should not feel any pain during the appointment. Because it is minimally invasive and often requires no incisions or sutures, many patients report significantly less postoperative swelling and discomfort compared to traditional bone grafting or extractions.
  • How long does the results last?
Current clinical data from 2026 shows excellent long-term stability. Studies tracking patients for over three to five years have reported a 100% survival rate for implants placed with this technique, with better preservation of the natural gum line than traditional methods.
  • Can any tooth be replaced this way?
While highly effective for front teeth in the "aesthetic zone," it is not suitable for every case. The tooth must have a healthy periodontal ligament and no significant mobility or vertical root fractures. We will perform a detailed digital scan during your consultation to determine if you are a candidate.
  • What happens if the "shield" fragment becomes infected?
Before placing the implant, we carefully remove the root canal and any infected tissue, leaving only a healthy "shield" of the root's outer layer. In the rare event of a complication, the fragment can be removed and the site can be treated with traditional grafting methods. In our experience, we have never had this complication.
  • Will I have to go without a tooth during healing?
One of the biggest advantages of this technique is the ability to provide an immediate temporary crown. In most cases, you will leave the office with a new tooth on the same day the old one was removed.
